Rest Is Resistance: Women’s History Month and Burnout Recovery

Women have carried communities through generations. This Women’s History Month, explore how rest, boundaries, and nervous system care support mental health.

Why this matters

Women—especially Black women, women of color, LGBTQIA+ women, and caregivers—are often expected to be “the strong one.” If you’ve been holding everything together for everyone else, you’re not alone—and you’re allowed to want relief.

The mental health link

Burnout isn’t just “being tired.” It can look like irritability, brain fog, numbness, sleep issues, headaches, or feeling like you’re constantly behind. If you’ve been surviving on adrenaline, your nervous system may be stuck in fight/flight/freeze.

Gentle practices you can try

·       Micro-rest: 60 seconds of unclenching your jaw, dropping your shoulders, and breathing out longer than you breathe in.

·       Boundary script: “I can’t take that on right now, but I’m cheering you on.”

·       Name the load: Write down what you’re carrying that no one sees.

·       Choose one support: therapy, group support, a friend check-in, or a body-based practice.

Reflection prompt

Where did you learn that rest had to be earned?

In Closing

If you’re ready to practice rest without guilt, you don’t have to do it alone. Therapy can be a space to unlearn survival-mode and build a life that feels more steady.

Amazon shopping suggestions (comfort + nervous system support)

If it feels supportive, you can create a “soft landing” at home with a few small items:

·        Weighted blanket or lap pad

·        Heating pad (shoulders/neck)

·        Sleep mask + earplugs

·        Herbal tea sampler (caffeine-free)

·        Guided journal or gratitude journal

If you want something that reminds you to choose yourself in real life (not just in your head), check out Keys to Felicity for affirmation-forward items you can actually use:

·        A journal for your “invisible load” list + boundary scripts

·        A cozy hoodie/tee that says what your nervous system needs to hear

·        A mug that turns your morning routine into a gentle ritual

You don’t have to earn rest by burning out first. If you’re ready to practice steadiness without guilt, therapy can be a space to come back to yourself—at your pace.
