There are phrases that feel like a mantra, and then there are phrases that feel like a homecoming. I AM my ancestors’ rest is both.
For many of us, our ancestors didn’t get to exhale. They survived systems designed to exhaust them—physically, emotionally, spiritually. They carried families, communities, and futures on their backs. They made a way out of “no way.”
So when we say I AM my ancestors’ rest, we’re not saying we’ve arrived at a life without struggle. We’re saying: I’m allowed to pause. I’m allowed to soften. I’m allowed to be cared for. Rest becomes more than sleep—it becomes repair.
At Felicity Counseling, we talk a lot about healing that is whole-body and whole-life. Rest can be part of your mental health plan—especially when you’ve spent years in survival mode.
Rest can look like:
-
Saying no without explaining
-
Choosing therapy and support
-
Setting boundaries that protect your peace
-
Taking your time to grieve, feel, and heal
-
Letting joy be part of your survival toolkit
In a world that still tries to measure our worth by productivity, rest is a radical reclaiming of humanity.
Reflection prompt
If you were writing a note to your ancestors today, what would you want them to know about the life you’re building?
Invitation
I’d love to hear what being your ancestors’ rest means to you. Share your story (a sentence, a poem, a photo, a memory) and tag it with #IAmMyAncestorsRest.
If you want extra support as you practice rest, Felicity Counseling offers trauma-informed, culturally responsive therapy for adults, families, children and teens. You deserve care that honors your story.
